Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2018!

Like a crisp, new sheet of paper in a brand new notebook, the New Year ushers in promises, fresh beginnings, and stories to unfold. The New year resolutions are made in bounty and we squeal in excitement. “We will change for the better and not break our resolutions“, we promise ourselves. Here’s hoping that you keep up all those promises. Even if you break them like 99 percent of us will do, do not live in regrets. With each passing year, despite the ups and downs, the successes and failures, I have realized that we will change eventually, for the better.

How to make 2018 a happy year?

I list a few things to remind ourselves now and then to make 2018 a fabulous year-

Accept life with its downside

Haven’t we heard it zillion times “Zindagi sab kuch sikha deti hai” ( Life teaches us everything). We cannot change people and there will always be weirdos and haters who will snide and applaud when we fall. Same for situations and circumstances. Things may not go our way. But that’s the true essence and drama of life. To enjoy it in its variant of colors. The beauty and the ugly coexist. Let’s accept this aspect of the journey and life becomes easier to handle.

Change – You’re not a tree

Long back I read a quote that has stayed with me. Considered as America’s Foremost Business Philosopher, Jim Rohn was a brilliant motivational speaker who enthralled the audience with his ineffaceable wisdom. He once said:”If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree.”Such simple words but a reminder of our indomitable strength and our capacity to move things by changing situations, work, people and even our thoughts. Use it.

Cherish family and friends

Cherish your inner circle. They’re the people who truly matter. Spend as much time with them and laugh when you can. Bury the hatchet with family and friends. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Reconnect with old friends and keep in touch.

Take a break

Have the courage to stand up for what is right and take a step closer to your goals. The jet paced life will push you to work harder and be a part of the rat race but once in a while- STOP. To breathe and enjoy this wonderful life.

Be grateful

As Sam and I walked to El Gaucho Restaurant in Sukhumvit for our Christmas Eve Dinner, we came across a woman with her daughter and puppy sleeping on the pavement. With a few belongings around them, they nestled with each other making their world complete. How much each one of us takes our lives for granted? We have so much, yet we crib. There is so much to be grateful for. Stop comparing with others. Count your blessings instead.

It’s good to cry

Cry!! Oh yeah! Crying is good. It releases pent-up emotions and anger. I often lock myself in a room, hurl abuses if I feel like it (I’m not ashamed to admit) and bawl my heart out. Surprisingly, once I’m done with it, I’m a lot clearer in my head and I can handle the situation better.

Enjoy new experiences

Enjoy new experiences! In this trip to Bangkok, Sam and I drove to the outskirts to enjoy a whole day of cooking with Chef Leez. Not only did we learn about the Thai cuisine, we met up with students from USA and China, shared stories and had practical experience by stirring up some good dishes. It’s good to get out of the comfort zone or do something different once in a while. If you don’t try, you’ll never learn more about yourself.

Don’t lose focus

Let no one pull you down or distract you from your goal. As we entered Wat Pho Temple, famously known for the Reclining Buddha, I was fascinated by the monks. Oblivious to tourists entering and leaving the temple or the flashes from the shutterbugs capturing pictures, the monks continued their Buddhist chants with a calm disposition. Meditation, writing in a journal or spending time in nature helps connect with oneself. Make it a part of your routine.

Travel / Discover

This year I have intentionally tried to include travel on my calendar. I have looked for weekends and holidays and planned out trips close and far. If you have no time to travel, how about discovering the city you live in. There’s so much that we haven’t seen as yet. On my visit to Kanpur three weeks ago, I visited the Jagannath Monsoon Temple and the Ancient Brick Temple in Bhitargaon. My maternal family has been living there since1952 and none had visited these architectural marvels hardly 35 km away. There is so much around us that we take for granted- not only our people but city too.

Whilst in London we took the Graffiti and Street Art Tour which helped us discover the art, history and outrageous stories that help make the East End the vibrant part of London. Yesterday, we spent a leisurely three hours at the Wat Pho and Wat Arun temples in Bangkok. They provide a multitude of pleasures from artistic pleasures to urban exploration.

I’m sure there are many more points that one can add to make any day better. I would love to hear from you. Do drop a line. I’ll be waiting.

Happy New Year guys! Make 2018 a year to remember.
