Delhi is abuzz with the plentitude of cuisines in the offing for its receptive customers. The customer of today is eager, excited and ready to experiment new cuisines. With live streams and Instagram updates by the million every day, we feel we know all the places the city has to offer. Right? Well! There’s a secret not many would know and we want to share it with you.

The Canteen at the Vietnam Embassy opens its doors to the Non-Embassy crowd only on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The entry is through the back lane where a dark blue board on a rather old door tells you that you have reached the destination. The interiors are simple, basic and clean. The walls are mostly bare except for a poster from the Tintin comics- “Tintin Au Vietnam”. The menu is restricted to Pho, Bun Cha and Com rang thap cam, all uniformly priced at Rs 250. Fried spring rolls or Nem and its vegetarian version Nem Tuoi are offered as starters and are priced at Rs 100 for 2 pieces.

Pho

The Vietnamese are very serious about their broths. We tried the Chicken Pho, a broth with rice noodles, chicken and generous amounts of spring onion and coriander. It’s light, fragrant and delicate in its flavors. Extremely healthy too. Bung Cha, a rice noodle with fried spring roll and Mixed fried rice or Com rang thap cam are both served with a broth which is made using fish sauce diluted with a mixture of sweetened vinegar, water, and lime. The broth adds some flavor to the otherwise mellow food. A chilled bottle of beer is what is needed to cool one down and it’s a part of their menu. By the time our meal was over, the place was packed with expats and officials from the nearby embassies.

Com rang thap cam

If you want an introduction to Vietnamese food, the canteen is a good way to get acquainted with the cuisine. Just don’t expect the food to be spicy. And one more suggestion; avoid going with the kids.
